Kathmandu, March 30: An application has been registered at the Election Commission (EC) today seeking information whether an office-bearers or executive indicted by the court on corruption charges could become or remain the member of a political party.

Right to information campaigners Taranath Dahal and Kumar Chaulagain jointly filed the application at the EC today as per the Article 27 of the Constitution of Nepal and Clause 3 and 7(1) of the Right to Information Act.

The applicants have sought information about the legal system, the EC’s practice and the legal process regarding whether or not a person convicted by the court on corruption charges could become a candidate in the election at any level either on behalf the party or as an independent, or remain in any political office or be appointed to any office.

Chaulagain said they have also sought information on whether or not any person, who has been penalized on contempt of court but has not undergone the penalty, could get elected the member of the parliament, become a minister or Prime Minister and remain in that post.

He said through the application they have also sought the EC’s views on whether or not any person could represent any party in the parliament if that political party is annulled by the EC. RSS
